Cleaning and sealing get sold together and are not the same job. One has a measurable effect on your bill; the other is worth doing for specific reasons, and only those.

What this work covers
- Sealing joints and connections with mastic or an aerosol process
- Duct leakage testing, before and after
- Insulating runs through attics and crawlspaces
- Cleaning, where there is a reason to clean
- Finding and fixing the source of contamination, not only the symptom
Sealing is the one with the arithmetic behind it. Ductwork running through an unconditioned attic or crawlspace that leaks at its joints is delivering air you paid to condition into a space you do not live in, and it is pulling unconditioned air back in on the return side. That is measurable: a contractor can put a number on leakage before the work and another after it, and the difference is the result. If a duct sealing quote does not include a before-and-after leakage measurement, you have no way to know what you bought.
Cleaning deserves more scepticism, and the clearest statement of why comes from the EPA, which says plainly that duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems and does not recommend it as routine. The situations where it does make sense are concrete: visible mould growth inside the ducts or on other components, ducts infested by vermin, or debris actually being blown out of the registers. Those are things you or the contractor can see. If none of them apply, the honest answer is that cleaning is optional.
One thing to press on if you do have it done: what caused it. Ducts that grow mould are ducts with a moisture source, and cleaning without fixing the source resets the clock rather than solving the problem. Be equally direct about anything sprayed into the system — ask what the product is, what it is registered for, and what happens to it afterwards.
What to ask before you book
- Will I get a duct leakage measurement before and after sealing?
- What specifically did you see that makes cleaning worth doing here?
- If there is mould, what is the moisture source and is that being fixed?
- Is anything being sprayed into the ducts, and what is it?
